How to tell it's almost September

The Beloit College Mindset List for the class of 2010

ETA: Is it me, or does this list seem particularly ... lame this year?

Those lists always seem to assume that "youngsters" are stupid and ignorant. Bleh.

I prefer to think of them in terms of me. As in, they're the same age as my 6th grade science teacher's fetus. (Oh geez, Mrs. Timo's kid is going to college! I'm old!)

Oh, and I'm biologically old enough to have birthed a gymnast age-eligible to compete at senior worlds this year. egads.

And it just occured to me that that girl in my junior high who was a mom at age 12 or 13 has a kid in high school now. She may even be a grandmother. wow.

That's because 90% of them are.

For that matter, so are 90% of their parents.

That *is* pretty lame. And now I feel very old. (toddles off to find my Geritol)

I went back and looked at one for my class and the raio of items that apply to me to those that don't is about the same. So the list aren't that exact.

For example from 2010: all very true of me!
They grew up in mini-vans.
They have always been searching for "Waldo."
They have always preferred going out in groups as opposed to dating.

From 2002: NOT TRUE
They are too young to remember the Space Shuttle Challenger blowing up.
They have never owned record player.
As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents.

Most of the 2002 list for me is not true.

Yes! And middle-class. I'm on an email list that's mostly middle-aged middle-class women, and they were all a-twitter about it last year; I mentioned (as irihs made me think about it years ago with her comments) that I found the list presumptuous and condescending, and crazy inaccurate. Someone responded back that I didn't know what I was talking about, and anyway, the list came from BELOIT, a highly-respected college. I decided to leave it at that.

as we used to tell strick back in the day
(everyone's favorite beloit native)

"Beloit? Isn't that the sound a pebble makes when you drop it in a toilet?"
