Where do we draw the line?

A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing the vegetarian shoes selection at endless shoes.  I noticed, as you may have too, that the first THIRTY NINE SHOES are Crocs of various sorts.  And the next page is about 50% crocs, too.

This led me to wonder... where is the dividing line between "eco-conscious" and "cheap petroleum-based crap"?  What is the difference between a vegetarian shoe from Natalie Portman's line and one from Jessica Simpson?
