sarahmichelef: (OMG!)

Am I just old-fashioned?

Went to Target today to get some shorts... because we're going on vacation w/ Mom's family next week and I only have 2 pair (not enough for a whole week!) The only reasonable (ie, not hotpants, not distressed to the point of not surviving three washings) ones were some Bermudas that were sadly not on sale (they're starting to put summer stuff on clearance, so I had hoped to find shorts there). But they looked cute and were badly needed, so I got them.

I also found a very cute white, acid green, and aqua blue halter top on the clearance rack. And it looked GOOD on me. WTF? I haven't worn a halter top since... well, I might have worn one in junior high. So clearly I had to get that. And then I thought to myself, self, Mom just told you that there's one evening when you might want to dress up. And this halter top clearly fits the bill, especially when paired with a new white linen skirt and the white sandals I got a while back. Oh yeah.

But it's a white linen skirt. It's not sheer by any means, but ... it's white. So I head over to lingerie to look for a white slip (which I don't own - just a black one). And there were exactly ZERO slips to be had at Target. None. Zilch. Nada. WTF? Does no one wear slips anymore? Does Target assume that everyone already has one? Do people who shop at Target just not care if the whole world can see their underwear? I don't get it.

So I walked over to KMart. KMart had slips in a variety of styles, lengths, and colors. Hallelujah.

Ah, slips. I, like you, am a fan, as I'm not into showing off my underwear. But I do get the impression that not many people - and especially not many people our age, at least not in the academic world - are into them. There are girls at school who in fact do not seem to care if the whole world can see their underwear. It's sort of strange.

I don't really like how the slips I have can make my legs all sweaty (the guest chair in one prof's office is right in front of a sunny window...), but the look-at-my-underwear solution isn't too appealing. It's so hard being a (cute) girl : )

I have never gotten why folk need or use slips. I don't notice being able to see my underwear without them with the skirts I wear (many or which given do have a lining.)

See, when I held my hand up inside this skirt, I could see it pretty clearly. And I just don't think the whole world wants to be able to have that view of my granny-panties.

Now, dark-colored skirts or lined skirts are an entirely different matter. With those I only bother with a slip if the skirt tends to be clingy in a weird way.

This coming from the girl who used to wear those super-sheer broomstick skirts with just a grownup onesie (er, bodysuit) underneath. Of course, I was also wearing them with Doc Martens...

Target is weird with the stock. I've noticed things like that before -- blatant lacking of whole sets of items. For boring utilitarian things like slips, it's probably best you went to one of the X-Marts anyway -- they tend to be cheaper, and who wants to spend a lot o' money on a slip? (Says the woman who once did just that at April Cornell when those stores still existed... *sniffle*...)

will we have wireless service out there? I really don't know what I'm going to do for a week without it. Really. it makes me breathe kind of shallow thinking about it.

I have no idea if there's Internet access out there. I think we're not even bringing any computers. (!)
