Tuesday Nights on Bravo
Aug. 6th, 2003 09:41 amSo I referenced this in a comment on
almejor's post about Boy Meets Boy.
I have very mixed feelings about this show, and it makes me wonder a lot of things. First off, I initially loved the idea of a gay dating show. And I also initially thought that the idea of having some straight men in the show was interesting as well, to more accurately represent the demographics that a gay man would encounter in the dating world. (At that point, however, the question must become, why not stack straight dating shows the same way?) But then I found out the rest of the twist: that if James picks one of the straight guys, that guy gets paid and James gets, well, diddly-squat. Now, if I found myself in that position, I'd feel damn used, and rightly so. So I'm really hoping that he does pick a gay guy so the whole thing doesn't become an issue.
I'm having trouble sorting out my objections to this situation. I think it's exploitative, but do I only think that because it's picking on a sexual minority? Would I feel the same way if it was a straight man or woman picking a gay man or woman and the pick-ee getting a payoff for "passing"? And what would the implications of that be, as far as sexual politics go? What are the implications of this going to be for gay civil rights?
But at the same time it's so entertaining and the boys are so cute. And my gay-dar is really really malfunctioning, becuase I haven't guessed ANY of the straight guys yet. But that might be TV interfering with my reception. :^)
Queer Eye is flat-out brilliant, however. Love those boys. Love what they do. Love how much of a bitch Carson was being in last night episode. Can't wait for Matthew to go on the job market so he can get made over for job talks (his idea, not mine).
