I've been having this problem where iPhoto won't print. It spools to my printer (Epson Stylus CS5400), shows up on the "Completed" list, but never actually, you know, prints. S'very frustrating. I thought I was going to be really really smart and download the latest drivers for the printer, but that didn't fix the problem.
Ideas?

Some of you are bigger geeks than me...
Sep. 29th, 2006 08:59 amOK, here's a weird weird problem. Last night we rebooted the wireless router, and ever since iChat can't connect to the AIM server. I get the "Connection to AIM was lost" error as soon as I log in. I know it's logging me in, though, because AIM Express got mad when I launched iChat while I was logged in via the web interface. Ideas?
ETA: It's fixed now. Somehow the port # got switched and I found the correct one and now it works again.
Bravo has apparently seriously underestimated the traffic that their site is going to get... It's taken me nearly all day to read Tim's Take on last night, and the site died when I tried to use "Rate the Runway" to look at pics of the dresses in writing my recap.
LeSigh. Dare I attempt to watch Kayne's exit interview?

well ain't that just special...
Sep. 1st, 2006 02:40 pmWent to the Apple Store and met with a very nice Genius. Apparently, the whine I have is inherent in the machine and there's nothing that can be done about it. So, y'know, the part where they made it seem like they had a fix for it? Big lie. Thanks, guys. I have such a love/hate relationships with Apple. Love the product, hate the comany. I wish they hadn't stopped licensing clones.
While I was at the mall, I stopped in at StrideRite to look at their rain boots. They start at a size 5. TRex wears a size 4. This seems to be a trend - no rain boots below a size 5. Or for less than twenty bucks. Ditto for real (read: insulated) winter boots. *headdesk* (Also - who in their right mind spends over a hundred bucks for a pair of kids' shoes?)
Then I stopped at Tim Horton's for an iced cappucino (butter caramel - yum) and some idiot was BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVE-THRU LANE. WTF? And he made it pretty clear that my options were to a) back out as well to let him out or b) let him back into me. Moron. So out I backed, and he peeled out of there without even acknowledging me. Jerk.
Went to RiteAid to get my 60 cans of Pepsi products for ten bucks, called
nenie to answer a question he had asked me on IM earlier in the day, and now I'm home again, going to grab the files that I've changed off of X2 and hopefully get SOME work done today.
Oh well. At least there's a new version of Jardinains2 for me to play.

two things
Sep. 1st, 2006 10:21 am1) After talking to Henry at Apple, I'm going to take Eloisa to the Apple Store so that they can actually witness the problem rather than me trying to describe it over the phone. So that's what I'll be doing instead of working out. Joy. But at least I can go and fondle the technology.
1a) I was very annoyed that they didn't even boot up the machine and check if the problem was gone, and then I realized that I hadn't disabled the little application that masks the problem, so it's not entirely their fault that they didn't catch the failed repair. D'oh.
2) OMG Extreme Glee! Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.
3) Project Runway. ( Read more... )

How I'm gonna make a million bucks...
Aug. 31st, 2006 02:30 pmIf MySpace is as wildly popular as it is with it utterly craptacular design and user interface, I'd like to see how popular a well-designed site could be!
Who's with me?
Who's with me?
DHL delivered the box for Eloisa today. Time to start figuring out where I'm going to back everything up. This frightens me more than I can say. What if I miss something? My pictures directory alone is 5 gigs. I'm just going to have to boot up X2 in target disk mode and praypraypray that she doesn't decide to do the non-booty thing afterwards, though I'm pretty sure that problem was an artifact of the stupid Mac data transfer program, since I've used TDM several time since with no drama.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Waiting patiently...
Aug. 25th, 2006 09:03 amApple's customer service opens at 6 am Pacific time. I have to call to find out what they're doing about the whininess of the first-generation MBPs. Sounds like I'll be getting a new logic board. Whoo. I see a massive data backup in my future. Whoopee.
This is too cool...

ah, that's satisfying
May. 5th, 2006 08:07 pmI have finally foiled ITS' clever plan to force us to use webmail. Well, actually M foiled it and I just cribbed his settings. So now my Canisius mail doesn't have to be forwarded to my UMass account for me to get it in Mail.
Now I just have to delete the 348 unread messages that I don't actually want (because they're duplicates of things that got forwarded to UMass.
Dude. I'm so totally lame these days.

It's a sign...
Apr. 27th, 2006 03:54 pmI'm not sure what it's a sign OF, but my UMass mailbox blew quota this morning. I'm notoriously bad about deleting things and I only get 30 mb and my students this semester are e-mailing me a lot of stuff... It's not as bad as when I was getting 500-page book manuscripts as attachments, but there were a lot of powerpoint files sitting in my inbox.
It's better now, though. Offloaded all course-related e-mails to my hard drive, deleted a TON of stuff, downloaded pictures of
peregrinning and
a_c_fiorucci's kid and the ones that
sprirtwolf sent me after passover and the ones of my friend Kara's wedding and the ones of my friends V&B's kids... You get the idea. The stuff, it adds up.
(Which reminds me that one of my projects for tomorrow needs to be backing up the new computer.)
Went to the gym for the first time in nearly a month today. That was lovely. Came home, found that the copy of Happiest Toddler on the Block we ordered had arrived. Soon I will speak neanderthal.
And so on... Our potential playdate for Saturday fell through, but we have the MoD walk on Sunday to look forward to, and the weather's supposed to not suck (60 and partly cloudy is the latest I've heard).
Thank goodness tomorrow's Friday.

The final state of the tech
Mar. 31st, 2006 08:37 pmOK, the MacBook (she still hasn't told me her name...) is now 100% up and functional; I set up Mail and migrated my mail folders from X^2 just a few minutes ago. Thank goodness - webmail was about to make me CRAZY! A couple of students sent me files that for some reason Horde failed to understand properly (it treated them as binaries rather than .doc files) but Mail merrily downloaded them in their true state. And yes, I even opened them to make sure. I'm going to give it a few days to make sure that I don't discover other things that I need to pull off of X^2 and then maybe next weekend I'll wipe her HD and start over there as well.
And now, just for fun, a picture of TRex and me taken with the iSight.
ETA: I know HTML. Really I do. Promise.
*headdesk*

The status of the tech
Mar. 30th, 2006 10:31 pmOK, here's the short version of the saga.
So after the whole iSight debacle I started transferring files from X^2 to the new computer. First I moved them by hand but then decided to back out of that method and use Apple's Migration Assistant utility.
Bad-freaking-idea. Long story short, it hosed a whole lot of apps and ultimately necessitated a clean reinstall of the OS.
Yes, you heard me right. I have ALREADY had to wipe my HD and reinstall. Joy. I had to wing it in class today (using a .pdf of notes pages of my slides) because Office was one of the hosed apps. My students who were supposed to be presenting today had their presentation pushed back to Tuesday.
But now things seem to be in good shape with the MacBook. I can't say the same for X^2. Last I checked, she was hosed in such a way that she'll only boot in target disk mode. And while I was planning to use her as 40 gigs of extra storage (and possibly a print/file server), I didn't intend for her to be unable to boot independently.
All of the other ways that the last 27 hours of my life have sucked forthcoming in other posts. The good news: the high tomorrow is 71, and we might get thunderstorms.

sick of me yet?
Mar. 29th, 2006 08:25 pmWell, after a conversation with Josh the friendly Apple tech support boy, I have reset my machine (remove all power sources; hold down power button for 5 seconds, reboot) and the iSight appears to be working. I have a case number in case it happens again. But it seems to be OK, so I'll proceed with the fun & excitement of installing more stuff.
Does anybody know where I put my Word install CDs?
Does anybody know where I put my Word install CDs?
Well, whatever hinkiness had infected my iSight seems to have healed itself. Clearly the computer just needed a nap. So I have before me an exciting evening of data transferring. If I'm really, really clever I'll manage to get everything set up such that I can actually use the new machine on campus tomorrow. How cool would that be?
Also, Terri Gross talking to the Beastie Boys is just too funny.
