Ever since we moved to Buffalo, I've joked about M's Canadiophile tendencies. He loves that we get the CBC and other Canadian stations standard in our cable package. He watches
DaVinci's Inquest and
DaVinci's City Hall when he gets the chance. His favorite radio station is one of the Toronto stations. So I just rolled my eyes when he came home one day a while back talking about a new CBC show called
Little Mosque on the Prairie. The premise: a hotshot Toronto lawyer has a religious awakening and moves to the prairie to become the Imam of the local mosque, which rents its quarters in the Anglican church. Hilarity and hijinks ensue. (There are clips on the CBC site...)
I didn't watch most of the premiere, but M raved about it. And then I heard
Zarqa Nawaz, the show's creator,
on Fresh Air. She's hilarious. M continued to rave about it, so I broke down and watched it with him. And I've continued to do so. This is some quality television. Last night's story featured a Western convert who was, as converts sometimes are, a bit over the top. So he was berating everyone for not being good enough Muslims and hollering "Allahu akbar!" at the top of his lungs at every opportunity. You get the idea. Additionally, there's great sexual tension between Amaar and Rayann, lots of comedy that isn't necessarily directly about Islam, and the relationship between Amaar and the Anglican priest is hilarious.
Apparently they've double-filmed some stuff so that it could be picked up by an American network, and they never actually SAY that they're in Canada. For now, if you want to see for yourself, it looks like almost all of it is
up on
YouTube.
Oh, and it really doesn't hurt at all that Zaib Shaikh (who plays Amaar) is double-extra cute.
Seriously.
