I'm sorry

I keep thinking that "I'm sorry" is one of the most troublesome phrases in the English language. Why? Because it conveys two different meanings, so easily confused. It can be an expression of sympathy/empathy, or it can be an apology. And to misunderstand which use a speaker intends can lead to interesting responses and conversations.
