I just called AA to request seats together for when TRex and I return from OK on Saturday.  I'd been able to do all but 1 leg of the trip online, but can't do the last one (ORD-BUF).  I've been in the position before where we were assigned non-adjacent seats and the airline refused to do anything about it - making it my responsibility to scramble when we got on the plane.  So much love for Delta and United on that score.  The nice lady told me that they reserve 20% of the seats on any given flight to be assigned day-of for just that situation.  We'll see if she was feeding me a line or not.  If she was, I will be quite irritated, especially since the major carriers have also done away with preboarding for families with small children (I'm hoping that we can swing boarding first-class on the TUL-ORD leg, because we'll be flying with my dad, who has gold status).
