Ben Folds!

Last night Ben Folds played at Canisius and we actually managed to get a sitter (poor James, TRex is NOT wanting to go to sleep - he ended up sitting by the side of our bed in total silence for half an hour until she fell asleep) and went to the show!  For those of you who haven't heard this story, M ditched me on our 6-month datingversary to go to a 21-and-over Ben Folds Five show at First Ave - it was a month before my 21st birthday.  Not only did he ditch me, he ditched me at HIS APARTMENT in Edina without transportation.  I think I watched movies with AnnZ and/or [profile] ciaweth that night.

(Note for the WMass crew - his next stop is the Mullins Center, May 6th.  How funny is THAT?  It's a good show - you should go.)

It had been approximately 11 years since I'd been to a gym concert.  (And this was, in fact, only my second Gym Concert ever - the last one was in the fall of 1995 - the Violent Femmes at St. Olaf.)  It had also been at least five years since I'd been to any kind of "rock" concert - the last one was a jazzy jam band show in downtown DC that we went to with M's family probably four or five years ago.  Anyway, there was a clear split between "old people" and the students... students cramming up to the front of the stage, "old people" sitting off to the side.  The Old People category included parents of younger teens who were at the show, people who were approximately our age (faculty?  staff?  I didn't know any of them, so I can't say...), and the odd elderly person.  (I'm not kidding - there were a couple of grey-haired biddies there.)

I confess - I don't know that much of his solo stuff.  I mean, I recognize and enjoy it, but we don't own any of his new cds and he doesn't get airplay on the radio stations I listen to.  I was definitely there to hear the old music, and I was treated to "Brick" (we wondered how many of the kids actually knew the story behind the song and could relate on any level), "Underground", "Kate", and "Tom and Mary" (during the encore).  M thought it sounded like he was sick of playing the BFF stuff - that he seemed to be rushing through it.

I did thoroughly enjoy the show - M has always raved about BF as a performer, and it definitely is a good show.  (As an aside, a former student of M's supplied the bass for the show - apparently the bassist's instrument broke in some critical manner.  We told him that he had to get it signed at the very least.  Also, another of M's students was working on setting up the hospitality room - The Ben Folds rider includes an assortment of PowerBars in very specific flavors.  Didn't get any dirt beyond that, nor did we manage to abscond with his backstage pass.)

ETA: I knew I was missing a BFF song.  He also did "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces".

I do not know the story behind "Brick," always wanted to. Where can I find it?

I don't know that there's an "official" location, but the story as I heard it is that BF and his girlfriend (I believe in high school) found themselves unexpectedly pregnant, and the song is the story of his experience taking her to the clinic to terminate the pregnancy and the aftermath thereof. As I understand it, when they decided to release the song, he called her to warn her that she might be hearing that story on the radio.

Hmm, if I'm remembering correctly, I believe M ditched me and Chris at the BF concert, and we had to get a cab back to Edina. Good times. I'm jealous you got to see him, I love watching him perform.
