The drain in our upstairs tub was not installed properly - a gasket that was supposed to be between the top bit of the drain (the part in the tub) and the tub itself was installed between the bottom of the tub and the pipes. No wonder there have been continual water problems up there.
Other things the plumber fixed: the drum trap (on which a gasket was apparently failing) was replaced with a u-trap including a cleanout access, AND there was no seal where the tub met the floor so every time I did things like, say, mopping the floor (or if water got out of the tub while we were showering, which it likes to do) we were putting water into the study.
Yay.
