Holy crap!

There are dudes with flames coming out of their heads on my TV!

And stoooopid me didn't think to watch the opening ceremonies live and in their entirety on CBC, rather than the crap NBC coverage that's going to be on tonight.

Now they're waltzing in cow costumes.

Project Runway, episode 10

Damn... I wish I had my headphones so I could listen to Tim's podcast before posting this. Oh well. I've read the 'blog.  And I'm (deliberately) posting before reading all of you guys' responses (except [livejournal.com profile] siriel's).
My commentary )

They were such sweet boys... and other notes.

Last night as we were eating dinner, M and I thought we heard a knocking on the door. But it sounded far away - the front door maybe? He went and chacked... nobody there. Then it came again, and we realized that there was someone knocking out the screen door into the porch. It turned out to be two very earnest young men hoping to talk to us about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We told them that we weren't particularly interested, but would they like to come in and have something to drink? I remembered not to offer them Pepsi. ;^) We chatted for a bit about all sorts of things ranging from the story we'd just heard on NPR that involved a phone call to the Penthouse Executive Club (which is apparently where you need to call if you want to talk to the authority on dry-aging steaks) and the Oklahoma State University Golf team. We let them leave us a copy of The Book of Mormon (we didn't have one, and I've been thinking it'd be good to have on the shelf - I figure it's a good thing to keep copies of major religious texts around) and didn't object when they asked if it was ok for them to say a prayer for/with us... we hadn't bothered telling them that we aren't Christian, which made it kind of amusing for us. Apparently we were the nicest people on our block, and they hate the door-to-door thing (not surprisingly). One of them said that he'd rather stop people on the street and talk to them, which I think would be way worse, though.

All in all, it was an amusing interlude. And after dinner we made lots of food for this next week (M made General Tso's Chicken, I made turkey-feta burgers and hummus for tonight (and two extra burgers to freeze)).

In other news:
The favorite SuperBowl commercial so far is the Neanderthan FedEx one. The favorite ABC promo so far is the Shaq Desperate Housewives ad (which just had me cackling out loud).

It's Thursday, it is...

M has a non-league raquetball match tonight...with the league coordinator, becasue the guy wants to assess the skill level of people. We went out and bought him new court shoes the other day because he's been using his old ones to mow the lawn, which might not go so nicely with the court.

My FL got to play a role in class today - they read Lisa Nakamura's article "Interrogating the Digital Divide", and one of the main points that she makes is we need to look at how minorities are using the Internet for PRODUCTION rather than just CONSUMPTION in order to assess the impact of differential access and use patterns.  So I mentioned [livejournal.com profile] xayide79's posting about the offensive theme park & how the Internet plays into the discovery, the response, and the possibility of mobilization (one of the things that Nakamura mentions is the Internet-facilitated mobilization of the Asian-American community in respones to the horribly offensive A&F shirts that came out a couple of years ago), and then of course yesterday's flak about WoW.
Project Runway, of course! )
And now I'm off for the rest of my madcap Thursday (gym, quick stop at home, doctor, pick up TRex...).  Tomorrow is Friday and thus DISSERTATION DAY!  Whoo.[Unknown site tag]

FOXploitation!!!

Is it me, or is Simon Cowell just being mean for the sake of being mean this season? It seems like he's just cycling through a repertoire of stock "Simon" phrases. All 3 American Idol judges have become charicatures of themselves, quite frankly. Meh.

But now it's Bravosploitation, and I remain convinced that Heidi Klum is the cutest pregnant lady EVAR! Heehee! "This also is a competition for you, as well." And Nick is about to pee himself in gayboy ecstasy! Glee! Tim Gunn on ice skates! Triple Glee! I'm literally squeeing out loud.

ok, tv geek friends...

I know there are a bunch of West Wing and CSI junkies here. Question for y'all: Jorja Fox has a kid? Because we're watching the ep where the lab explodes and she's CLEARLY pregnant - I'd put her at somewhere between 20 and 25 weeks. IMDB doesn't know anything about it, though. 'Sup with that?

ETA: the ep is from 2003, just for context.

ok, sometimes the writers still got it...

I haven't really watched ER in a long time, but if it's on, I'll watch it. Today's I actually wanted to see because Neela and Michael were getting married.

The last line of the ep is "I do" but it sure ain't Michael or Neela saying it... instead it's Luka in response to Abby's "Should we be doing this?"

Heh. And from the preview of next week, it looks like tonight's wedding might not be the only one this season. Double-heh.

I am spammy mcspamalot today

Zoey Bartlett endorses Excedrin Migraine. And one of the other Bartlett daughters (woe... bad fangirl... can't think of her name... the one in med school at Hopkins) endorses Claritin.

Freaks me out.

This message brought to you by alphasarah needs to watch less TV.

You have GOT to be kidding me...

Oh good LORD. I'm flipping channels and I happened across My Super Sweet 16 on MTV. Could these children be MORE SPOILED? I caught the end of the ep with Janelle, a Cuban girl living in Miami who was having her Quinceanera and seriously, before I knew I was watching MTV, I was sure it was a wedding show. What else would explain the primadonna all in white with identically-dressed attendants hovering around her and gushing over how pretty she looks?

This one, about Carlysia, whose daddy is an R&B star, is more disgusting, because this little girl is greaking talking about herself int he third person and demanding a Mercedes convertible for her birthday and so on...

This is like the antithesis of my 16th birthday. My huge excitement was that I got contacts. Oh, baby. And I went to a New Year's party at (oh god) Darren's house which was a big deal because we'd just gotten back from 4 months in the Netherlands and I hadn't seen anybody since the end of August.

Review: Bones

I've been watching the previews for this new TV season and thinking that Tuesdays are going to be hard for me. I've recently become quite addicted to House, which is at the same time as Commander in Chief, which I also want to see. But that's beside the point. The point is, there's a new show on Fox called Bones that probably wouldn't have caught my attention all that much except that it features David Boreanaz. OK, and a show about a forensic anthropologist could be cool, but that wouldn't have been enough to suck me in.
We'll have to see how it shapes up. It could be a real clunker, or it could end up hitting its stride and be very entertaining. Unfortunately, I'm expecting it to be the former.

I should not be allowed to watch Vh1

Because then I am reminded that Eminem is engaged in a concerted campaign to make me respect him. I hadn't heard the new song until this morning, and I really like it.

There was another reason I shouldn't be allowed to watch Vh1, but I don't remember what it was. Maybe because I'm consistently irritated by the Top 20 Countdown hosts (well, since they got rid of Aamer Haleem, who actually has a brain, and I have to say the new guy is a bazillion times better than *shudder* Rachel Perry).

More on Queer Eye

So one of my favorite blogs to read, Electrolicious, has some Queer Eye related links, among them the Fab Five F***ability ratings. Aw yeah.

Tuesday Nights on Bravo

So I referenced this in a comment on [livejournal.com profile] almejor's post about Boy Meets Boy.

I have very mixed feelings about this show, and it makes me wonder a lot of things. First off, I initially loved the idea of a gay dating show. And I also initially thought that the idea of having some straight men in the show was interesting as well, to more accurately represent the demographics that a gay man would encounter in the dating world. (At that point, however, the question must become, why not stack straight dating shows the same way?) But then I found out the rest of the twist: that if James picks one of the straight guys, that guy gets paid and James gets, well, diddly-squat. Now, if I found myself in that position, I'd feel damn used, and rightly so. So I'm really hoping that he does pick a gay guy so the whole thing doesn't become an issue.

I'm having trouble sorting out my objections to this situation. I think it's exploitative, but do I only think that because it's picking on a sexual minority? Would I feel the same way if it was a straight man or woman picking a gay man or woman and the pick-ee getting a payoff for "passing"? And what would the implications of that be, as far as sexual politics go? What are the implications of this going to be for gay civil rights?

But at the same time it's so entertaining and the boys are so cute. And my gay-dar is really really malfunctioning, becuase I haven't guessed ANY of the straight guys yet. But that might be TV interfering with my reception. :^)

Queer Eye is flat-out brilliant, however. Love those boys. Love what they do. Love how much of a bitch Carson was being in last night episode. Can't wait for Matthew to go on the job market so he can get made over for job talks (his idea, not mine).
