I haven't been following the whole suspension/deletion flap all that closely, but I did go read the letter from Barak Berkowitz. Clearly there was a screwup, but I want to observe a couple of things.
- Dear lord he should have had someone proofread that before he posted it. When you're trying to fix a massive screw-up, you want to make sure that your response to said screw up doesn't include strike-thrus fixing bad grammar or phrases like "I would hate to be apologies every hour, Its late."
- In the letter they say that "we make it clear that interests listed should be evaluated within the context of “I like x”, “I’m in favor of x” or “I support x”. " I had absolutely no memory of this, but I also hadn't updated my interests in a really long time, so I went and looked. The instructions read as follows:
Short single-word phrases are best.
Rule of thumb: You should be able to put the interest in the sentence "I like ________".
When referring to nouns, use the plural form for consistency, e.g.: "I like DVDs" instead of "I like DVD".
GOOD Example: biking, snow skiing, computers, dvds, mp3s, cheese
BAD Example: I like lots of bands and watching movies and talking to friends and going to clubs. That sort of stuff goes in your bio below.
To me, that's not as clear as the letter makes it seem. It's in relatively small text, to the right of the box. Someone who's not paying close attention could EASILY just start typing away in the textbox without ever reading the directions.So... hooray for them owning up to having screwed up, but so far I'm not so impressed with the PR job that's going into fixing it.
