Hometown News
Jun. 7th, 2007 03:58 pmEver since I moved away from home, my parents have sent me clippings from the local newspaper. (Do other people's parents do this?
greydora, do they send you stuff, too?) Usually it's engagement announcements, wedding announcements, etc. As I've gotten older, these little nuggets of hometown insanity have gotten less and less frequent.
Today, though, I got a very entertaining one. It included this article about SHS's graduation. It is noteworthy because of the commencement speaker - my friend Terrence Anderson. T went to the Naval Academy, where he captained the football team, and is now an orthopedic surgeon at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. I am in no way, shape, or form surprised to hear any of this and glad to know what T is up to. He's a cool guy.
The other article was a piece about my old bud Luke Anthony. I have known Luke longer than I've known most people - we were in the same kindergarten class. He lived a block and a half up the street, and there were a bunch of us who roamed the neighborhood (and the creek that ran behind most of our houses) like bandits. He might have even gone to the same after school babysitter that I did; I can't remember. After elementary school, he was the popular football player and I was so very not, but he was always still nice to me. I remember I ran into him downtown once during college when I was home and we chatted for a bit. Saw him again at my HS reunion a couple of years ago - he said that he'd just been telling his fiancée/wife (can't remember if they were married at that point) that he was really hoping to see me there. As cheezeball as that sounds, coming from him it just isn't. He's just that damn genuine and nice. Anyway. That article is about how he's just started his own law firm with offices in downtown Stillwater, and how he specifically moved into the Westwood school district so his older daughter (who's 6) can go to the same elementary school that we did. How amazingly cheezy is that?

This evening in our world...
Jun. 7th, 2007 11:10 pmWe gave the shrubberies a haircut. A really serious haircut. The ornamental cherry is about 2/3 of its former self, and much less scraggly and uneven; M pulled down the vines that were climbing the house and did a bunch of other pruning. Bound up the big sticks and stashed them next to the house. M also almost finished pulling out the violets that were threatening to take over the pachysandra on the side of the house. I saved a handful and have them in a cup in water in hopes of rooting them and turning them into a houseplant.
I also want to do some research on taking cuttings of rhodedendrons. We have one in the back yard that's not doing well and I'd like to maybe move it or get a cutting started to put one in someplace else. (Oooh... there's a shrub by the back porch that's dying & needs to be taken out... maybe we could put a rhody there!)
Our astilbe are going like crazy, and will be blooming within the week. And the swamp plants (we can't remember what they're called) are at least as big as they got last year - a good 2', maybe 2 1/2 (they're about 4' at maturity). TRex's garden is going like crazy, too. The coleus are doing really well; the gerberas are done but still pretty and green, and the begonias are begonia-like.
