Last night TRex was sitting on my lap eating her dessert and I was flipping through the new issue of Wired.  We were playing "Uh dat?"  (What's that?)  We got to this ad:
glenlivet ad
and she said "uh dat?"  I answered "That's Glenlivet."  She nodded wisely and said "Glenlivet."

Smart girl :-) But of course, I have to ask - if "what's that" comes out as "uh dat", what on earth happens to "glenlivet"?

Heh. I knew you'd ask something like that.

"Glenlivit" comes out as clear as can be.

It makes no sense. Maybe you can explain it. ;^)

I love it! That's how I read the post, but then figured, that can't possibly be right...yay!

I've been reading various things about the crazy stuff kids do as they're learning what words sound like lately - it's really entertaining :-) There are reports that kids will keep pronouncing known words/phrases in the (babyish) ways they first got used to saying them (basically a rehearsal effect), while being able to pronounce new words more clearly. Maybe? Who knows.

That certainly jives with what we've observed. I think it's probably a combo of rehearsal effect and pure laziness - she knows that we recognize "taytoo" as "thank you" and "base-it" as basement (or bracelet, depending on context). We noticed this early on in her language development - she'd get a word closer and closer to the correct pronunciation and then stop when it got to a point that we could understand her.

Good girl!

Now, we teach her Balvenie, Laphroaig, and a few other choice, single-malt terms.

So did you go on to do what baronessmartha does with her daughter...this is what you buy ex-boyfriends who do stuff for you, this is what you buy someone you like for a birthday gift, this is what you buy for yourself to drink....*grin*
