Because I would totally be sending my kitchen's fragrance out over it right now.  I have "Creamy Indian Lentils" crocking away in the crockpot right now.  And they smell deeeeeelicious.  Yum.
Creamy Indian Lentils (provenance unknown)
Serves 6

1 T olive oil
2 C onion - thinly sliced
1 C brown rice
1 T curry powder
2 t mustard seed
1 t salt
1/2 t black pepper
4 C water
1 c lentils
1 c cilantro - chopped
1/2 c fat free sour cream

Directions as written:
In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.  Add onion and saute until browned.  Add rice, curry powder, mustard seeds, salt and pepper.  Saute 1 minute.  Add water and lentils, bring to a boil.  Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.  Remove from heat.  Stir in cilantro & sour cream.

What I'm actually doing:
Dump everything except the cliantro and the sour cream into the crock pot.  Cook on low.  Add sour cream and cilantro just prior to serving.

that sounds really wonderful. The fact it's freezing cold outside isn't hurting either.

That does sound yummy!

I know you wanted to make it easy by dumping it in all at once, but if you pre-fry the mustard seeds just for 30 seconds or 1 minute in the olive oil, it would really bring out their flavor -- much more than letting them soak in the liquid and cook slowly. Not sure how much Indian cooking you do, but that's a standard trick at the beginning of many dishes -- the seeds (cumin, mustard, coriandar, etc.) get fried briefly in ghee and then other ingredients are layered in after that.

Yes, I thought about that after the fact. Next time I may just do the browning bits first and then crock it.

Ever since I saw lentils on Good Eats, I've been wanting to make some. I think I may give this recipe a shot. I hope it tastes as good as it smells!

I actualy wound up making a variation on this last night since when you posted I had most of the ingredients.

-Unfortunately I threw it in my crockpot after the line that outlet/circuit was on tripped.

-Further I didn't realize it had tripped (as the quickest way to tell is the light over the stove goes out and I thought it had just blown),...and when my crockpot didn't warm up properly, I thought the crockpot was dead as I hadn't used it since a cabin camping trip a year ago.

-Fortunately I had another smaller crockpot under the sink.

-Unfortunately while it had never been used, the box had gotten water damage about 2 years ago and I had never bothered to take it out.

-Fortunately it only affected the box, and the plastic still covered the crockpot inside and all the internal wrappings and the pot had been untouched.

So I wound up moving all the contents to the 2nd much smaller crockpot (which it just fit). But by then (once I noticed things weren't cooking etc) it was 9pm. Which is to say I'm currently eating this for breakfast now with some freshly made Naan.

My variations

-chopped onions (yum),
-Red Thai Curry Paste, as I couldn't find any curry powder.
-petite yellow lentils, rather than the standard fair.
-Not as much black pepper as I have no black pepper barring what I hand grind. I have tons of cayenne and just keep forgetting to buy black.
-I probably used more sour cream as I heart sour cream.

I suspect the whole thing came out hotter as a result of the hotter curry paste. The fresh cilantro does add a really nice taste.

Thanks for sharing!

oh and I did brown the mustard seed and the onions and the other spices first. This is actually why (plus just having washed my crockpot 1's container in the dishwasher) I wasn't tipped off that it wasn't heating up for awhile.
