Uh-oh...

I have occasionally teased [profile] greydora about turning into our grandmother*, particularly when she does things like packing the cardboard box from her microwave mac-n-cheese into her suitcase to take home & recycle.

Today when I went downstairs to start a load of laundry, I noticed that the dehumidifier was full.  And so, rather than dumping all that water down the sink, I dumped it into the washing machine (since I wash on cold anyway).  And then it occurred to me that that was a very Grandma thing to do.**

*Our grandmother who spent our family vacation last year squirreling away cookies and sandwiches and various other foodstuffs in her dresser drawers, which were ultimately confiscated by the cleaning staff because critters were getting into her room.  Our grandmother who woke both greydora and me up at ungodly early hours of the morning washing out plastic bags when the three of us were sharing an apartment at Kibbutz Gat while there visiting our uncle and his family, probably 9 years ago now.

**Grandma who does things like collect the runoff from her roof and use it to water her indoor plants, or to flush toilets.  That said, she does live in LA so there's SOME logic there

Um... [livejournal.com profile] helwen and I do that, for watering the plants (not for flushing the toilets -- yet). Since we're getting so much off the one roof over the studiolo, we're planning on adding a second barrel, too.

I know, and I think it's brilliant. I was just amusedly drawing parallels between what I had just done and things that I know my grandmother does.

I was looking into barrels for our new house. My fear is increasing the mosquitos - how are you guys dealing with it. (btw: if you have not figured out - this is KayLeigh/Lisa - *wave*)

The easiest way is to put a screen across the top of the barrel. That will also catch any debris that gets washed off the roof.

What we do, however, is have a whole in the lid for the barrel that the downspout just barely fits into, leaving very little clearance.

Either way, the idea is to keep the mosquitoes out of the barrel so that they can't lay eggs in the water.

Something that I had a number of years ago, but haven't verified: I was told that mosquito larvae can't survive in agitated water, so perhaps stirring the barrel vigorously every day would help. But like I said, I haven't verified that...

i can't help it, i have an environmental conscience. And i also wash out my ziploc bags and use them again.

...so this is wrong things to do?

I am hard press to in find the problems *grin*. Though I must admit - sandwiches in drawers is a bit far.

Though I have not yet packed something to take 1500 miles home to recycle like greydora - I tend to remove most of my stuff from work and bring it home.
