Western Mass residents will probably be familiar with the personage of Dave Ratner, proprietor of Dave's Soda and Pet City. I loved to watch "Dave's Pet Show." Anyway, you can imagine our surprise when we were watching TV the other night and up pops Dave, advertising a local furniture store.
Buh?
We're not in Western Mass anymore... What is Dave doing on TV? We thought he was purely a local phenomenon?
So I did a little creative googling... The pet store chain is in fact local... stores in Agawam, Northampton, Hadley and Springfield. It appears, however, that Dave has another career... that of Dave Ratner Unleashed!. It seems that Dave is also teaching other entrepreneurs how to get the most bang for their buck by touring as a motivational speaker.
It still doesn't explain why he's appearing in commercians in Western NEW YORK, but at least it makes a little more sense.

(random factoid: there's an Asian grocery near us called the "HooWa Grocery." Makes me chuckle every time I see it.)
My car is now 100% New York legal - all inspected and stickered and everything. I'm always nervous taking my 17-year-old car in for inspection, even though its previous owner babied it - it lived in the garage, was washed on a regular basis, etc. Most importantly, it didn't live in a place where they use salt on the roads. Six years in MA certainly have taken their toll in that regard. But she remains road-worthy for another year (despite my suspicion that she needs a new muffler).
Also, I have a cold. It's not clear to me whether it's something TRex picked up at daycare and gave to me (she's a bit snuffly, too) or if I got whatever Elisabeth has when I was at her house for Textile Guild on Tuesday evening. So I've made myself a pot of tea and I'll do my best to muddle through, especially since between the cold and Tuesday's DMV adventures, I've gotten SQUAT done this week. And the lawn needs mowing DESPERATELY so that will be my daily exercise. The iPod is charging in anticipation.
This weekend we're going to exciting Corning, New York to watch Josh and Jacy cross the finish line of the Wineglass Marathon (and yes, they will have run the 26.2 miles leading up to said finish line). We will torment the loser mercilessly.

OK, you people are smart...
Sep. 20th, 2005 11:24 amI have a comma-delimited list. I would like to convert said list to a carriage-return delimited list. I have not figured out an easy way to do this. Neither TextEdit nor Word will allow me to find-and-replace where the replace portion is a carriage-return.
Suggestions? In the long run I'd like this comma-delimited list to make a 1-column excel spreadsheet. Any versions of how to do it that end up with this end result will be welcomed.

Sep. 8th, 2005 09:39 amThe Internet is being stupid today... blogger won't load and I want to make it so that I can't get comment spam... and LJ is being very slow, too.
I got my first fencing bruise in 14 months last night. Whoohoo!
Going to our first event in the Hale on Saturday. It's an RP/HP. There's an A&S comp and display - I'll probably compete - and fencing. Maybe I'll even review the current Aethelmearc rules and authorize... M is planning to. We're ditching court on the theory that we don't know anybody here yet and there are reportedly going to be peerages, which means it will be looooong. Also feast, which makes me sad 'cause it's Indian. But we are NOT feasting with TRex, no matter how good she is.
Went to central PA for a wedding last weekend. Central PA is a weirdweird place. But we did go to the outlets; both of us got new jeans, M got new shoes (which were desperately needed...), and we got a dustbuster and a some little tools (on sale 3 for $5) at the Black & Decker outlet. We'll have to make another outlet trip (maybe when M's parents are here for TRex's birthday in TWO AND A HALF WEEKS OMG!!!!!!) because that child is outgrowing everything we got as hand-me-downs from K&M's kiddos.
Joss Stone's voice should NOT come out of a cute 18-year-old British girl. She should be doing bubblegum pop. Not that I'm complaining, just that it's a bit ... incongruous, that's the word I'm looking for.

Jun. 27th, 2005 11:51 amParents were here for a week. Dad was at a conf at MHC, Mom hung out with us and watched TRex while M and I started the process of packing. Hallalujah he saw the light that we should do more than just organize & inventory stuff... Living room now full of boxes. Most of them are Yellowtail boxes, prompting J&J to accuse us of being lushes. And yet they were the ones who wouldn't stay to drink champane with us. Boxes need to be moved upstairs to the crapden, aka the study.
The a/c in my office has decided NOT to create a river across the floor today. This is a good thing.
Oklahoma-worthy thunderstorms yesterday while we were enjoying the air-conditioned mall. The power went out several times; Target is wicked dark in the 20 seconds between the power going out and the generator kicking in. It was odd to see which stores had generators and which didn't. While we were sitting in the food court enjoying our Dairy Queen treats, the power went out and the only store that had lights on was PacSun. Weird. TRex thought the hard rain was pretty nifty... kicked her fat little legs all over the place when we took her outside to get splashed by it.
Have gotten no academic work done for the past two weeks. Sucks. First M was out of town, and then parents were in town, and yeah. Books to read. Notes to take. Dissertation prospectus to write. MUST have a first draft done before we move. I WANTED to have the damn thing defended before the move, but we're now down to a month before closing and 5 days of that we'll be in Oklahoma, and another week of it is the week that we move.
Chatting with J about high school and who we've lost touch with and who we're interested to see (both in a we'd-like-to-see-them sort of way and in a morbidly-curious sort of way) at the reunion next month. Sadly many of our folks aren't able to make it due to jobs and vacations and such. Ah, well. Will be interesting in any case. Need to continue efforts to convince R that it really is worth driving in from Memphis for the weekend even if he wasn't in our class. Maybe he could go as A's date or something.
Have to go to Albany for homebuyer training. Meh. At least maybe I'll be able to hook up with an internet friend and meet her twins.
Yay, going to see
master_mr and E this weekend (dude - e-mail me so we can work out details). Once a year is not often enough to see good friends, even in years when there are massively extenuating circumstances. And
jennybeast, give us a call. You can still crash with us if you come up to visit, and we'd ADORE seeing you!
Dude.
aethera. Masssive hugs. Glad y'all are getting back to even more normal than before, if you two can ever really be called normal.
OK. I think that's it for now. I need to get an LJ client that supports tags.

Early Sunday Morning
Apr. 3rd, 2005 09:12 amNo one I know is pathetic enough to be online this early on a Sunday morning, apparently.

Deaths come in threes:
Terry Schaivo
John Paul II
(prediction) Prince Rainier of Monaco
I think I've figured out why the Pope's decline captured my attention so. I'd always found him an interesting, even anachronistic figure (that is to say, I find the Pontificate anachronistic). But I was thinking about it last night, and I've concluded that on some level, he reminded me of my grandfather. Grandpa was about 10 years older than the Pope, but they were both stooped in the same way (Grandpa from osteoporosis, not from Parkinson's disease), moving so carefully and appearing so frail in their last years. In the end, they even died of the same thing - well, ultimately they both died of old age - but I was thinking of sepsis.
S'just interesting.
