I realized I haven't rambled about the gym in a bit. I only managed to get there once last week - Thursday I had a couple of appointments, and then they were predicting weathery DOOM on Friday (which of course didn't materialize). This week, however, I hit the gym THREE TIMES! Amazing. Tuesday and today I lifted & did 20 minutes of cardio; yesterday I learned that the max time you can punch in on the elliptical machines is 31 mintues, so that's what I did. M went with me today as well, though we completely ignored each other the whole time we were there.

Starting in January TRex and I are taking a mommy-and-me swim class. I signed us up yesterday. On the way out today, M picked up the gym booklet for the winter and was all excited about the raquetball league, except that he thought that it meets on Tuesday nights, which is when Textile Guild is (once a month). So we argued about whether or not I should forgo textile guild so he can go play raquetball and then when *I* read the announcement, I beat him about the head and shoulders with a wet noodle because he was being dumb. The league *starts* on 1/10 (a Tuesday) but players have two week windows in which to schedule and play their assigned matches. Which means that it DOESN'T have to be on a Tuesday. Duh. So he's going to join the raquetball league. Go, M.

I think my plan for next semester is to do weights and cardio on Weds and Fri (days I don't teach) and then to just do cardio on days that I do (Tuesday and Thursday). We'll see what actually happens, since in addition to teaching, I'll hopefully be adding a dissertation group to my schedule. It's all about making the time, however.

Working out on elliptical trainers always makes me feel like George Bush on a Segway. But I persevered and did 45 minutes on the thing. In terms of bang for your buck, these dudes really win. I just can't think about what I'm doing or I feel like I'm going to fall on my head.

Should I make an exercise filter, or do all of you want to hear my blathering?

As my previous post probably made clear, we've finally had an appreciable amount of snow. (Well, I think there was quite a bit over Thanksgiving, but we weren't here to experience it then.) There's probably about 3" out there, total. The bigger issue is that it's blowing like crazy. The wind was actually enough that I could feel the house shifting a bit this morning (and this house is really sturdy - less likely to do that than other houses I've lived in). So my trip to and from daycare was rather entertaining - I was fine as long as I didn't have to start from a complete stop. In those cases, I did slip and slide a bit before I got going. Extra slipping and sliding if I was starting and going around a corner at the same time. Four-wheel-drive was sounding really nice... I'm curious how long it will take us to break down and get an Outback or a 4WD Vibe (I don't think M would go for that... he hates the Vibe/Matrix for the same reason I love it - because you're sitting up so high relative to the size of the car). This afternoon will be MY first adventure with the snowblower (to get the rest of the driveway clear and to do the sidewalks... why, oh why, did we buy a house on a corner lot?), and fortunately there will be NO video of that!

because I worked my little tush off today... I lifted for about half an hour, doing some tweaking of what Dan the nice gym boy suggested (adding weight on a machine or two, dropping weight on a couple of other ones) and then I rowed for half an hour. I'm apparently the only person under the age of 70 who wants to use the rowing machine, and since there are only 2 of them, there's competition. I'm competing with people old enough to be my grandparents for exercise equipment. Oyvey. Tomorrow: long cardio.

I do think that the new contacts & the drops are helping - I really notice a difference in how my eyes feel right after I put in the drops.

great.

Apparently my current (old) contacts are not breathable enough for my eyes, so I've got a lot of excess capllaries (ie, blood-shot-ness), and some scatching of my cornea where the contact apparently digs in. Am I being scammed? I don't know. The upshot was new, much more expensive contacts that, when combined with what seems to be neosporin for my eyes twice a day for the next week, should resolve the negative effects of my old contacts. Bonus: the new contacts are the sort that you can supposedly sleep in for up to a month, although this optician recommends removing and cleaning them once a week once I've treated the old contact-induced issues (during which time I'm to remove them daily). I also was going to get new lenses for my current glasses, since the script is old enough that I don't feel comfortable driving in them. But the difference between new lenses for my old frames and entirely new glasses ended up being only about $130 and my current frames don't have spring hinges (bad when you have a baby who likes to enthusiastically remove your glasses), so I got whole new glasses, too. AND they're little and purple. Bonus points there, eh?

Gym orientation went well. I chose the strength training orientation because, frankly, I know how to do cardio. So the nice boy showed me all the machines, gave me a card to record my workouts on (damn... that'll keep you honest), and set me free. I decided to forego more weights and go do cardio. Unfortunately the 2 rowers were occupied by the geriatric set, so I found myself a nice recumbent bike, popped Me First and the Gimme Gimmes into my ears, and raced that pesky dot around the monitor for half an hour (mental note: Interval 1 is BORING!).
