New Mac vs. Vista ad (quicktime, natch).  Bwah!  <3 John Hodgman.

A while back I decided that I wanted instant access to lots of things at my fingertips - so I loaded tons of stuff on my menubar. And eventually it started driving me CRAZY. At one point I had on my menubar: google notifier, iTunes controller, weather, displays, battery status, wireless, date and time, volume, spotlight, quicksilver, iGTD, twitterific, and Adium.

Yeah. Waaaaay too much. Over the last couple of days I have shifted everything over to the Dashboard - all that's left up there is the date and time (hacked to display as "Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 12:59 pm) and Spotlight, which I don't think I can get rid of. For the record, here's my list of widgets:

  • iStat Pro (probably more than I need, but I like data)
  • Google Calendar by manas tugare
  • Gmail
  • the standard weather, clock, iTunes, and calendar widgets
  • Twitterlex by Bret Taylor
  • Airport Radar - MacWireless.com's wireless monitor
  • iGTD Inboxer
  • Prod Me
  • Flappie (just for fun)
I'm much happier. :^D

Apple

Oh how I <3 Apple.  We all know this.  My case of iPhone Lust is well-documented.  But really, the iPod Touch is much more my speed.  Here's why.  Even before anybody develops native word processing and so on for it, there's enough free WiFi running around the world at this point that you could do work on Google docs and the like without having to use up precious storage space on the device itself.  It really does have the potential to serve as an ultraportable computer - no, not with all the functionality of a "desktop replacement" notebook, but on the other hand, the iPod would fit in my purse.
